A tip calculator keeps the arithmetic clear when you are closing out a meal, delivery order or shared service. The formula is straightforward: tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100. The grand total is the original bill plus the tip. If several people are splitting equally, the per-person amount is (bill + tip) ÷ number of people. This widget updates those three values together so you can change the tip percentage or group size without doing the math again.
The inputs accept decimal bills and custom percentages. That means you can calculate a 17.5% tip, split a small coffee order, or check a large dinner receipt with the same tool. The result is formatted as currency for readability, but the calculator does not assume anything about tax rules, service charges or local tipping customs.
Before or after tax?
People tip from different bases. Some calculate on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the final amount after tax. Restaurants may also include automatic gratuity for larger groups. Use whichever bill amount matches your situation. If gratuity is already included, set the tip percentage to zero or enter only the extra amount you want to add as part of the bill. When in doubt, check the receipt line items so you do not accidentally tip twice or underpay a required service charge.
Private, quick and practical
Tip calculations often happen in public or on the go, so the page is intentionally lightweight. It does not upload the bill, call a payment service or store your spending. Everything is done in the browser with normal JavaScript arithmetic. For real payments, remember to round in a way that works for your group and payment method. If one person ordered much more than another, an equal split may not be fair; use the per-person result as a baseline and adjust manually as needed.
