How fuel cost is calculated

The cost of a trip depends on three things: how far you drive, how much fuel the vehicle uses per distance, and what the fuel costs. Different countries express efficiency differently, so the calculator first converts any unit to litres per 100 km. For a figure in km/L the conversion is L/100 km = 100 ÷ (km/L). For miles per US gallon it is L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG, and for miles per UK gallon it is L/100 km = 282.481 ÷ MPG. The distance is also converted to kilometres, using 1 mile = 1.609344 km.

With everything in common units the fuel needed is litres = distance (km) × L/100 km ÷ 100, and the trip cost is cost = litres × price per litre. If you enter the price per US or UK gallon, it is converted to a price per litre using 3.785 or 4.546 litres per gallon. Ticking Round trip doubles the distance, and the per-passenger figure is simply cost ÷ passengers, which is handy when sharing a ride.

Getting realistic results

Fuel economy varies with speed, load, temperature, traffic and driving style. Motorway driving at high speed, a roof box or cold weather can raise consumption noticeably, while steady driving at moderate speeds lowers it. For the most accurate estimate use your own measured consumption: fill the tank, note the distance on the trip meter, refill and divide the litres added by the distance travelled. Manufacturer figures are measured in laboratory conditions and are usually optimistic.

The result covers fuel only and does not include tolls, parking, insurance, depreciation or maintenance. Use the cost per kilometre or mile to compare vehicles or to decide whether to share a journey. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, so no trip details are ever uploaded.

How to use

  1. Enter the distanceType the trip distance in kilometres or miles and tick Round trip if you are also driving back.
  2. Set your fuel efficiencyEnter your consumption in L/100 km, km/L, MPG (US) or MPG (UK) — check your trip computer or fuel receipts.
  3. Add the fuel priceType the price and choose whether it is per litre, US gallon or UK gallon.
  4. Split the costEnter the number of passengers to see each person's share along with the total fuel and cost.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MPG to L/100 km?
L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US) or 282.481 ÷ MPG (UK). The calculator performs this conversion automatically.
What is the difference between US and UK MPG?
A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres while a US gallon is 3.785 litres, so the same car shows a higher MPG figure in the UK system.
Where do I find my real fuel economy?
Fill the tank, reset the trip meter and divide the litres added at the next fill-up by the distance driven. Real-world figures are usually higher than the manufacturer's number.
Does the cost include tolls, parking or wear?
No. The result is fuel only. Tolls, parking, tyres and maintenance are not included.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. All calculations run locally in your browser.
